What You Won't Get At The Supermarket!

Will local food markets be able to compete in a global, corporate world? Some question their legitimacy in today’s economy.

Localized, gourmet food can be more expensive than the leading mainstream supermarket brands. But prices aren’t what drive crowds in every year. It’s the artsy, bustling scene. Londoners agreed that there has been a shift from common produce to more prepared foods due to the influx of tourists, especially within Borough and Portobello markets.

The markets draw in crowds of locals and tourists alike offering much more than just fresh produce and funky antiques. They’re an experience in themselves.

You can hear butchers screaming “fresh meat” from the Rhug Estate organic meat stand or see people drooling over delicious sweets. It’s the presentation, the enticing smells, and the people that personify a market.

Each market has an identity that is distinguishable from supermarkets. Borough Market has an extensive range of produce and beverages for people to try that will tickle their taste buds. Portobello Market is known for its role in the Hollywood film Notting Hill. On Saturdays, you can find fresh vegetables or unique antiques for a good price. Broadway Market in Hackney has more localized, gourmet food. Artisanai Fresh Pasta’s ricotta and spinach ravioli with tomato sauce is to die for!

A Vendor's Perspective

Food stands appeal to people "in their late teens upwards — all ages with no noticeable bias though we haven’t done any scientific analysis,” says Claire from Flax Farm. Vendors’ prices are comparable with high quality supermarkets.

Like Flax Farm, other localized gourmet food stands offer high quality products for the same price as quality supermarkets, which is a better value!

What Does The Future Hold For Markets?

They’ve found a specific niche in the ever-growing world of supermarkets and corporations. Markets offer an experience that differs from one to the other. Food markets will continue to be a place for people to meet up with friends and enjoy a fresh berry smoothie and handmade sandwich. You can’t find that experience in a supermarket!
